Rhonda is a Rhode Island Red. Both her parents were large fowl, she’s about the size of a bantam, but we can’t bring ourselves to cull her because she’s just so feisty and personable. My husband is of the belief that her mother cheated on the rooster with a passing parrot, a belief supported by the fact that we are Rhonda’s favorite spots to perch.
My son left the gate open, and our dog (a retriever with strong bird dog instincts) naturally went to investigate. He stuck his nose in, and most of the flock immediately started flapping around, practically inviting the dog to come chase them.
Not Rhonda though. She hopped right up on flower pot by the gate and pecked him right on the nose. He yelped, she squawked and pecked at him again, and the next thing we know she’s chasing him all the way back to the house.
So I gave her a bunch of mealworms, told her she’s the best guard-chicken ever, and put her back in the coop. The dog is still rather confused about what just happened, but he’s pretty sure the cat is never going to let him live this down.
