Rhode Island Reds

Purpose: Dual Purpose
Comb: Rose
Broodiness: Average
Climate Tolerance: Cold
Egg Productivity: High
Egg Size: Large
Egg Color: Brown
Colors: The red should be a deep, dark Mahogany or Rust color, the darker the better. Some birds can be so dark as to appear black from a distance, both sexes have black tails with a “beetle” green sheen.  I’ve noticed a few with these same black feathers on their necks and wings.

The Rhode Island Reds were developed in the US in the 1840s, making them one of the oldest known breeds of chickens.  They do also come in bantam sizes.  I do not have any of the bantams, just the large fowl, though Rhonda herself is on the smallish side.   Needless to say, Rhode Islands are a bit on the feisty side and can be temperamental, especially the boys.  I find them to be intelligent and curious, as well as fearless.

Weights for large fowl: Pullet 5 1/2 pounds, cockeral 7 1/2 pounds, hen 6 1/2 pounds and cock 8 1/2 pounds.
