Comment on I want to get chickens! by Gategrrl

Oh boy. I live in a residential area in a valley in LA-and I *residential*. My next door neighbor A was given two chickens by his brother. They were beady-eyed, red, skinny ugly things they let fly around and roost wherever they wanted. Their dog eventually ripped the throat out of one of the chickens. I have no idea what happened the other one, but it disappeared (or was taken by someone who wanted chicken for dinner?).

Neighbor B actually responsibly built a wire coop on our adjoining fence along our two properties. They had about 4 or 5 beautiful hens, some standard American breed, I think. And TWO roosters. The roosters, which didn't bother me *too* much, did bother my husband a LOT. It turned out that here in LA, you have to have a permit to have poultry on your lot to the tune of $300. And you're not allowed to have more than one rooster in order to prevent cockfighting. When I called animal control, the woman on the other end said something like, You do know that roosters crow, right? That's what they do." Almost killed her over the phone. Neighbor B actually kept the cage pretty clean, and I never smelled the chickens. All I wanted was to get the roosters gone: there's no need for them. Oh well--about a month later, no more chickens.

And now Neighbor C has some chickens. One of them escaped on a semiregular basis, and one of their chicks turned out to be a rooster. I don't hear the rooster anymore; I think they gave it away, or it died. I think now they keep better track of them.

Back when I was kid in a Boston suburb, there was no way anyone would have *thought* to have chickens in their backyard. It just wasn't even a thought! I think it's interesting that here in LA, it isn't such a strange thing (apparently), and although I *like* the trend, I do wonder at the responsiblity/knowledge level of people who take on the care of chickens in a suburban environment.

Hey, I'm working on this square right now, and I noticed a typo in round 7 I thought you might want to change. Right now it says *[dc in next ch 2 sp, 3 hdc in next ch 2 sp, etc.
It should read *[3 dc in next ch 2 sp.
Also, there should be a ) after 3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr. There isn't one there right now, which confused me a little. But I was also watching tv while working on that round, so that might have just been me not reading the pattern very closely. Anyway, thought you might want to know.

I <3 Rhonda.

I always picture the stories like a children's story book, and imagine how I'd have drawn the pictures to go with each scene.
